Good Naked, Bad Naked, and this one is really big.

We are certainly not in Kansas anymore in this household. Had to go into school today to approve a new program Boo is starting on Health and Hygiene which includes knowing which parts are supposed to stay inside the pants and when it is okay for hands to follow them down there - and other stories.
There is a brilliant work book that the school have researched which had sections for me to fill in on what we call things (we decided on Penis and Wiener) and what rooms it is okay to be naked in (Bathroom, Change room and Bedroom) and where and when it is okay to touch things.

.........The other discussion I had with my big Sis was how to explain where modesty is appropriate, without creating a lot of unnecessary guilt or shame......

"Sis just said to tell him his "Big Penis" Belongs in the Bedroom. End of Story"

Um No, that was not the end of the story. This was cute little Liam …

Liam and I are off to Nerja on Monday. May do a little photo-blogging from the Balcon de Europa Hotel where we get free wifi, while sipping a glass of Rose and eating La aceituna.

It is just Liam and Me. We are flying Ryan Air for the first time ever. It will be very hot. But I have a feeling that once we get there it will be grand. Just got to get there...

So Sorry but all product reviews pending will be when we get back and get settled again.

Today I am going out with my new purse...

Yep, that's right. I have finally after 18 months found a bag that makes iPad truly mobile.
Mobile as opposed to just portable.

You see, your average kitchen chair is portable, you can move it from place to place but I don't think you want to wear it down the street. An iPhone or iPod touch in a cover with a lanyard is mobile. It can go everywhere you go (except swimming) so the Communication App you are using to get what you want can go everywhere too. This means that the people around you are going to consistently prompt you to use that App and that consistency promotes independence.

But an iPad? To date I have been unconvinced. Even less convinced when people talk about introducing it as a table top communication device, which gets taken away from the user when that session is over "to keep it safe" !!??!!
How does that person then generalise their new communication skills spontaneously if their device is locked up in a…

Looking into the void.. or How to survive 7 weeks of school holidays when it isn't really summer..with Autism

Image
My kids attend an Evidence Based School which for the last 10 years has been privately managed and partially funded by charitible contributions. This last 12 months, the Department of Education and Skills finally "recognised' the school in order to fully fund it and give our staff some security.
Unfortunately the deal involved compromise and now instead of a time-table that suited the pupils, the school year is mandated by the Teacher's Unions.
So this July, instead of 5 weeks of standard education with an emphasis on social skills and integration we only get 2 weeks of excursions and jollies.

That leaves us with a long Summer to fill...

I know I sound a bit cross about this. But when you go from a place where the entire school system revolved around the needs of the individuals with autism, to something resembling the place we waited years to leave (their previous school) it just breaks your heart.

And yes we do get to apply for our additional 2 weeks mandated July Prov…

Note To Self:

I am not a tattoo kind of person. Firstly, I cannot imagine spending money on something that I can't change, and secondly, while I'm sure they look great on people with plump firm skin, I fear I may turn out to be a saggy old lady with indecipherable wrinkly tattoos. So no "ink' for me.

But if I did get a tattoo, I would get this:

Because I often forget. And I fear it is often at the root of so much of my children's, my husband's and my own often indecipherable behaviour.

It is hard, because I am a pretty gutsy person. I like change, I like a challenge. I get bored VERY easily and like to flit from one new thing to the other. Hell for me is being stuck in one place, doing one thing.
But my hell is someone else's heaven. Some people like consistency, the familiar, stability.

Anything unpredictable makes them anxious and it is important to be empathetic to this, to understand that very real anxiety about the unknown.

Because if I remember my high school m…

Personal Business

Well folks, it is only a matter of time before the next stage of Gracie's development as a Lay-dee begins. First, a little music to set the scene:

And we have only just begun..
to see the mood swings, a lot of crying for no reason that we cannot console. We also have the change in body shape and um, please click away if you are easily freaked out but..things are growing.

Luckily for me, I have had the support of the Saplings Educational Director, Supervisor and some very dedicated tutors to get me through this next step.
Grace has actually been following an ABA Task Analysis of a "Pre Menstruation" program for over a year now. There was an unfortunate gap when the Department of Education and Skills.. *coughs* ...took over our school and Gracie's personal care program was literally, sent home..

But I got some good advice and with the backing of EPSEN and the NCSE booklet on my rights regarding the implementation of an existing Individual Education Plan, I got the pro…
